The Venue

The museum is set up in the house of the former caretaker of the Idrovora Sacchetti in Staranzano, which is one of the water drainage plants that reclaimed extensive marshes in the 1930s. The Idrovora Sacchetti is now owned by the Consorzio di Bonifica della Venezia Giulia.

The History

At the end of the 19th Century, the reclamation of many marshy areas was finally completed, due to a series of projects that were carried out over the decades, until after World War II. The reclamation of these areas brought to a hydraulic and land reorganization of the land, together with a dense network of irrigation canals and watering areas and an improvement of sanitary conditions. The natural landscape of coastal wetlands was thus profoundly changed. Many wetland habitats have been replaced by industrial areas and intensive cultivation.
It was only in the second half of the last century, that an increased awareness of the issues of environmental conservation and biodiversity protection brought to attention the need to take care of territories, according to the principles of sustainable development.

The Project

Inside the museum, a series of touch screens allows the consultation of interactive maps that help visitors visualize the transformation of the Isonzo plain, allowing them to understand the techniques of land reclamation and deepen the themes of climate change and sustainable development in order to respect the environment. Thanks to the virtual reality experience, it is possible for visitors to explore the areas of the wetlands and experience the transformations that occurred as a result of the hydraulic works.
